Owners of the Xbox Series X game console released late last year can now enjoy active Dolby Vision on supported titles thanks to a new testing phase. However, there is (still) a catch: even LG’s modern OLED TVs don’t seem to be able to cope with a refresh rate of more than 60 Hz when the dynamic HDR format is activated in games. The Sony KD-55XH9005 has also been affected.
Dolby herself has now spoken and made it clear that Dolby Vision is a frame rate independent technology which should therefore normally work with higher frame rates as well. The company now wants to sit down with TV makers and provide firmware updates with appropriate bug fixes.
For its part, LG is already promising new firmware versions for its 2021 OLED TVs in the near future. At least on these models, Dolby Vision in combination with 4K and 120 Hz should no longer be a problem for the foreseeable future. It is not clear whether older construction years should also be supplied. The same applies to televisions from other manufacturers. Since the Dolby Vision gaming feature for Xbox Series X is still in beta, there is still plenty of time for TV-related improvements. (Fountain: Forbes)
