The sibling and best friend receive the same information as the parents of the kindergarten group and the boss. Until now, this has been the case for WhatsApp’s “last seen” status. This reveals the last time you logged into Messenger. In the data protection settings of the service, you can activate the screen for all or all contacts, or deactivate it completely.
WhatsApp beta with more detailed settings
Testers can now hide the “Last Seen” screen from people – there is a new option for “Except for my contacts” status in the beta privacy settings. If you touch it, you can choose from the address book who should not see the information.
However, the same rights apply to both sides: you are also not allowed to see the information of contacts whose online status is withheld, explain this WABetaInfo.
The feature can be found for iOS in WhatsApp beta 22.9.0.70 in the account settings under “Privacy > Last Seen”. The provider published the version in the Easter holidays. However, only the few users listed in the Testfight program can test them. For Android, the vendor has integrated the setup in beta version 2.22.8.9 distributed through Google’s testing program; both test programs are complete.
More new WhatsApp features coming soon
In the future, WhatsApp users will not only be able to exclude individual contacts from the online status, but also from the profile picture and their own description. In preparation, the messenger also has a group chat function called “Communities”, which aims to facilitate communication between schools, clubs and organizations, among other things. It is also planned to be able to react to messages with emojis, as in Signal.
WhatsApp is owned by the Meta Facebook group. Encrypted messages set Messenger apart from its competitor Telegram, as the joint comparison test conducted by c’t and Mac&i (here with iMessage) found. Signal is still the best option. With this alternative, the data does not end up in Meta and much less metadata is generated than with WhatsApp.
