Two Tribes is a name that is probably familiar to e-shop enthusiasts, especially in the 3DS and Wii U era. Well known for its original Toki Tori, which recently relaunched the original Game Boy Color through limited-run games, on Wii U and 3DS, the company has developed and released a variety of great games, such as EDGE, HURRY, Toki Tori 2+ Y BANK. The latter two are particularly relevant to the company’s latest announcement, which was that it made the PC version of its custom game engine open source.

You can read all the details and access the files on Github, which includes a lot of information to help potential programmers get started. As for the versions of Nintendo that used the engine, Toki Tori 2+ and RIVE are good examples on Wii U and more recently through their Switch ports. RIVE was the studio’s last in-house game and has excellent 2D images that move at 60fps.

The engine emphasizes 2D layered images with good performance, with the PC version of the engine being now open source. Some of the company’s comments on the launch are below:

We Two Tribes have been using this engine for over a decade. The engine was originally designed as a Nintendo DS game engine when creating games such as Worms Open Warfare 2. It has since been used in many games for the Nintendo Wii, Playstation 4, and PC, among others.

It offers basic 3D functionality, but Two Tribes’ main focus has always been on 2D gaming, so this is where it really shines! Our games have always strived to run at 60 frames per second while delivering stunning 2D layered images.

We’ve decided to release the PC version of the engine on Github (see license below) and can’t wait to see what other developers can create with it!

It is a great initiative on the part of the company, which resumes its activity after a hiatus. It’s also worth noting that Toki Tori 2+ and RIVE: Ultimate Edition are currently enjoying deep discounts on the Switch eShop.

Let us know what you think of the open source engine, and if you are a fan of Toki Tori 2+ and RIVE in particular.
