Meta warns: These apps steal passwords
07/10/2022 17:27
Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has identified around 400 malicious apps that steal Facebook users’ login credentials. The apps are available through Apple’s App Store and Alphabet’s Google Play, Meta Platforms Inc. announced. Apple and Google were told about the apps. Meta has also started notifying users whose accounts may have been compromised.
Apple says it has removed the 45 malicious apps identified by Meta from its App Store. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The apps in question were disguised as photo-editing programs, games, and commercial apps, for example, according to Meta. There are many reputable apps that offer similar features. Knowing that these applications are popular, cybercriminals try to impersonate them to trick people into stealing their accounts and information.
Meta advises Facebook users to be careful if an app doesn’t work without requiring a Facebook login and password.
