Sony announces a new PlayStation feature. This Thursday, July 14, 2022, those responsible for PlayStation reveal the “PlayStation Stars” loyalty program and explain what exactly is behind it. In the accompanying blog post, Grace Chen, Vice President of Network Advertising, Loyalty and Licensed Merchandise at Sony, comments on the content.
PlayStation Stars will be available to players when it launches later this year, including PSN credit and select PlayStation Store merchandise. Now you can find out exactly how this is supposed to work.
How PlayStation Stars works
A new system that directly rewards you for playing. In a nutshell, that’s what Sony is planning with PlayStation Stars. As Chen explains, the new system is designed to reward those who join Sony on its “ever-expanding gaming journey.” In practice, this means that you get rewards for completing certain activities or achievements on your PlayStation in one or more games.
Of course, participation in the Stars program is free, and everyone can sign up as soon as the feature is ready for release. The next step is to earn rewards as a member. This happens, for example, in the form of campaigns and activities that need to be completed. A specific example is a monthly “registration campaign” where you just have to play any game to get a reward.
But other campaigns can also be about winning tournaments, winning certain trophies, or even being the first participant to complete a blockbuster title with the famous platinum trophy.
In principle, all PlayStation Stars members should have the opportunity to accumulate loyalty points. As a result, these can be redeemed in a catalog that includes, among other things, PSN credit and select products from the PlayStation Store. Another bonus is that PlayStation Plus members who are signed up for PlayStation Stars will automatically receive points for PlayStation Store purchases.
digital collectibles
As part of PlayStation Stars, there will also be another type of reward called “digital collectibles”. These are “as diverse as our portfolio of products and franchises,” emphasizes Sony’s vice president of Network Advertising, Loyalty and Licensed Merchandise.
These are digital representations of things that PlayStation fans would love, including figures of popular and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, and cherished devices that reflect Sony’s history of innovation. There will always be a new collectible to earn, an extremely rare collectible to aim for, or something amazing to collect just for fun.
Today’s launch marks the beginning of PlayStation Stars, which will continue to grow and expand in the future. The program is currently undergoing step-by-step testing before it is gradually rolled out regionally and becomes available later in 2022.
