You can now play Age of Empires IV on the weekend! Source: Xbox Game Studios

A big and not a small surprise for all RTS fans! This weekend you will have the opportunity to play Age of Empires 4 yourself. Somewhat unexpectedly, those responsible announced a “technical stress test” via Twitter, which should be open to anyone interested. The technical test should begin this Friday, September 17 at 7 pm and then remain available until Monday, September 20, 2021, also at 7 pm AoE 4 will be launched in its entirety on October 28, 2021.

After the closed beta event in August, it will be the first time that the Age of Empires IV game can be recorded and shown without NDAs and restrictions. You can get your personal access to Age of Empires IV Open Beta directly through the product page on Steam or through the Xbox Insider Hub app on PC.

The public stress test pursues these objectives

The publisher Xbox Game Studios and the developers at Relic Entertainment and World’s Edge have defined a total of three content differences that will be the focus of attention over the weekend and that will differentiate the new test from the closed beta in August.

  1. The stress test has the logical goal of testing servers, matchmaking, lobbies, and other systems if there are a large number of active players at the same time.
  2. For the first time, you will not need an invite over the weekend and you do not have to be part of the Age Insider program to play Age of Empires 4. The access methods mentioned above are available to everyone. The larger the audience, the better the stress test, explain those responsible.
  3. Additional game settings should make hardware verification possible. During testing, your computer automatically detects what performance your hardware can provide and automatically configures the game correctly. To participate in the AoE 4 stress test, you must meet the minimum requirements.

The 4 Minimum Age of Empires Requirements for Your System

  • OS: Windows 10 – 64 bits
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6300U or AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
  • Memory: 8 GB
  • Graphics: Intel HD 520 or AMD Radeon RX Vega 11
  • DirectX: version 12

Recommended software and hardware:

  • OS: Windows 10 – 64 bits
  • CPU: 3.6 GHz 6-core (Intel i5) or AMD Ryzen 5 1600
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: Nvidia Geforce 970 GPU or AMD Radeon RX 570 GPU with 4 GB VRAM
  • VRAM: 4GB
  • DirectX: version 12

Since the closed test in August, a few other things have changed as well, based on testers’ feedback. For example, the camera can now be set at a greater distance to ensure a better overview in battles. The balance of the villages was also being tested. Both the Chinese and the English have already undergone adjustments. Of course, a number of bugs have also been fixed in the areas of graphics, audio, economy, and game settings.

This content is in the stress test.

One of the most crucial questions still open to most stakeholders is probably about the content that will be available to you in Age of Empires 4 over the weekend. Because all modes, races and events are not yet available in the current version. However, AoE 4 already offers you a colorful mix of possibilities. Thus, they can compete with each other in the online multiplayer lobbies, but also test the game and test things out in peace against the AI.

These features are included on weekends:

  • Online multiplayer games
  • custom multiplayer lobbies
  • Mission Zero (Tutorial)
  • Four civilizations: English, Chinese, Holy Roman Empire, and the Abbasid dynasty.
  • Five different cards
