- Gamescom 2021 was a complete success for the organizers.
- The fair, once again purely digital, was able to register 30 percent more viewers than the previous year.
- The date for hybrid gamescom 2022 has already been set.
For a long time, organizers hoped that gamescom 2021 could take place as a hybrid trade fair, mainly online, but to some extent also with visitors in Cologne.
It wasn’t until May that all local events were canceled and gamescom, like the year before, became a purely digital event. However, this apparently did little to detract from the popularity, on the contrary: Koelnmesse now reports a 30 percent increase compared to 2020, as measured by live viewers of video broadcasts.
Consequently, the entire transmission offer would have reached more than 13 million live viewers in 180 countries; almost six million of them watched the opening gala “Opening Night Live” (ONL) moderated by Geoff Keighley.
This made it one of the most successful game shows of the year around the world. During the ONL more than 30 titles were presented, some of them new, such as the reboot of the series “Saints Row” or the mix of Marvel genres “Midnight Suns”.
Impressive trailers alternated with longer game sessions and interviews with studio guests. Over 1,500 accompanying co-streams on Twitch, Youtube and Facebook Gaming took the event further into the online world.
Consequently, the organizers expect the total number of views, as in the previous year, to increase again many times in the next few days, as the shows and clips are still accessible and many game-loving fans only click after. .
Gamescom 2022 date set
The gamescom conference, which was designed for a specialized audience, was also very well received: more than 118,000 people followed the extensive program on both days; many of the contributions can still be viewed on the gamescom now portal.
After gamescom is before gamescom – there is already an official date for next year’s event. And it appears to be designed as a hybrid event again: “We hope to see you again on site in Cologne from August 24-28, 2022, and not just digitally,” reads a first press release. (ch)
