The Xbox Series X comes with 1 TB of SSD storage, and the Xbox Series S comes with 512 GB of storage. At Microsoft’s pricing, the $ 299 Xbox Series S jumps to nearly $ 520 if you want to add additional storage for a total of 1.5 TB. Larger Series X may be more appealing to those who need storage, especially as games enhanced for the Xbox Series X / S will start to need it. Series X certainly helps with storage options.
An alternative to this expandable storage is to use a USB drive to store your games when you don’t need to play them. You can also run it directly from a USB storage if it’s not extended for the Xbox Series X / S. Alternatively, you can copy and use the drive as cheaper cold storage.
It’s difficult to determine the price of these expandable storage cards. This is because there are not enough equivalent PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs. Sony has chosen to allow players to slot their drives into the PS5, but these drives must meet the speed requirements of the internal SSD. These speed requirements mean that PS5 owners need the best PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives that are starting their way to the PC. Samsung announced the 980 Pro Earlier this week, the fast read and write speeds could make it an ideal candidate for the PS5. Samsung’s 1TB option for the 980 Pro costs $ 229.99, but Sony hasn’t yet revealed a PS5 compatible drive.
The advantage of Sony’s more open approach is that the price of compatible PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs will inevitably drop over time due to competition and lower manufacturing costs. Assuming Sony has certified most high-end drives, there should be many options. Microsoft needs to increase the number of manufacturers of expandable Xbox Series X / S storage cards in order to create competition and reduce prices over time. It will be a long-awaited game to see exactly how Sony and Microsoft will handle extensible storage options in the coming months.
