As Microsoft announced, the Xbox division celebrated record results in the last quarter. A development that, according to the Redmond software giant, is mainly due to hardware sales and Xbox Game Pass.
Microsoft presented last night the annual report for the quarter ending September 30, 2022. As can be seen, the quarter ended with record results for the Xbox division.
Overall, the Xbox division generated $3.61 billion in revenue from July 1, 2022 through September 30, 2022. Compared to the same period a year earlier, this corresponds to an increase of 0.47 percent. A positive development, which Microsoft attributes mainly to increased sales of hardware, sales of which increased by 13 percent. In addition, sales in the gaming sector increased by four percent.
Meanwhile, Xbox content and services revenue fell 3 percent despite growth in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.
Xbox Series S mainly attracts new customers
Microsoft traditionally didn’t give hard numbers on Xbox console sales, nor did it give hard information about the number of Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. However, an interesting detail was obtained from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. As he confirmed, half of the Xbox Series S consoles sold so far can be attributed to customers who have not previously owned an Xbox console and are therefore new to the Xbox ecosystem.
“We’ve seen usage growth across all platforms, driven by the strength outside of the console,” Nadella said. “PC Game Pass subscriptions are up 159 percent year over year, and with cloud gaming, we’re transforming the way video games are distributed, played and viewed. To date, more than 20 million people have used the service to stream games.”

He added, “Looking ahead to the holidays, we’re offering the best value with Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Series S. Nearly half of Series S buyers are new to our ecosystem.”
