Apple has released iOS and iPadOS 16.1 as a new developer beta. We know, that there will be a major architecture update for Apple Home later this year. Then there is the question of who is in charge of the controls in the smart home. The iPad can still do this right now, but things will be different later on. If the user does not update later, the iPad will remain as a hub.
Subject: These device types will be supported at launch
However, Matter accessories require an Apple TV or HomePod as a home hub. The iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 betas released to developers today add a new Matter Accessories section to Settings (see our screenshots). Nothing can be found there at the moment. Tapping on the Matter Devices section will show all Matter accessories that have been added to a connected service in the future.
Matter relies on three technologies as standard: Bluetooth LE for setup, Wi-Fi for use when high bandwidths are required, e.g. B. Video streaming via a camera and the emerging Thread protocol for, for example, motion sensors and other low-bandwidth scenarios (we already mentioned Nanoleaf lamps, Eve hardware, and the HomePod mini like a border router does a few times). The app interfaces for automation will work as before, only under the hood everything should be compatible at best.
