Dusseldorf Homeowners are struggling with high oil and gas prices. Many think about installing new heaters. If you’re currently looking to upgrade your system or lower your energy costs, you’ll often come across a so-called fuel cell heating system during your first search.
In contrast to classical oil or gas heating, which simply burns a fossil feedstock, fuel cell heating is less well known and less intuitive to understand. But what potential does the system have?
“The fuel cell is efficient and flexible,” says Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, director of the hydrogen association Hydrogen Europe. “Anyone who is already thinking about their children is installing a fuel cell heating system.”
His vision: in the future, fuel cell heating systems could be powered by green hydrogen, which in turn would be generated with electricity from renewable sources. “Without hydrogen, we won’t be able to achieve the thermal transition,” says Chatzimarkakis.
