Apple’s new iPhone update, iOS 14, was released on September 16th. One of its big features is that you can change the default email app from Apple’s email app to another app. If you’re like me and you’re using Outlook and Gmail instead of email, this is a big deal.
Normally, when you click a link to an email address somewhere, your iPhone will open Mail and usually start a new message from your Apple iCloud account. When this happens, it’s annoying because emails may not be sent from your normal work or personal account, and you may miss a response sent to an unused inbox.
This change was first announced in June when Apple announced iOS 14. Apple’s Attempt to Deal with Complaints from Competitors..
Changing the default email app on iOS 14 is easy and takes just a few seconds. I changed to a work Outlook account. This is because I usually send emails to my account. But many other apps support this Too.
Before you start, make sure you are running iOS 14.0.1 first. This fixes a feature bug in the first version of iOS 14.

- Open the settings.
- Scroll down to your email app. (This example uses Gmail, but What is supported.. )
- Tap the Gmail icon.
- Tap “Default Email App”.
- Change to the app you want to use.
that’s it. Now when you tap the link to start a new email to someone, your iPhone will use the default app of your choice. You can change it at any time by following the steps above.
