MIUI 12.5 came along with the Xiaomi Mi 11 presented. The update is an intermediate step on the way to MIUI 13, which will probably reach the first mobile phones towards the end of the year. With MIUI 12.5 brings Xiaomi many visual enhancements, as well as support for the Chat bubbles from Android 11. There are also new super wallpapers, more privacy-Options and the ability to link your smartphone to the PC.
New animations, haptics and sounds
With MIUI 12, Xiaomi has introduced many new animations that make the system appear “more alive”. With the update to 12.5 these will be optimized and new animations will be added in many places. The control center also has a new look. If you swipe down on the left side, the notifications will open. You can access the quick settings from the right side. This menu could already be optionally activated in MIUI 12 and has become the standard with 12.5. In the settings, you can reactivate the previous layout in the item “Control center layout”.
Many system applications like Weather o Uhr have gotten an update, have new sliders and animations, and generally look a bit more modern.
The improved feel is also new. Instead of a simple vibration, you should receive various mechanical feedback when using the smartphone, which corresponds to what is happening on the screen. If you’ve used an iPhone before, this technique may sound familiar. Since iPhone 6S use Apple this on your system. It is not yet known to what extent Xiaomi can bring this technology to older smartphones. The Wed 10 for example, it has a very high quality vibration motor that Little F2 Pro on the other hand a very bad one. Therefore, not all devices should benefit from the new feeling.
A lot has also happened with tones. Xiaomi has recorded sounds and sound effects from nature and makes them available on all system sounds.
New (super) wallpapers in MIUI 12.5
With MIUI 12, Xiaomi has introduced the new super wallpapers, which range from the always-on screen to the lock screen and the home screen. With Earth you now have the option to choose from other places like Greece or Italy. Saturn has been added as a completely new planet. Besides planets, you can now also set mountains like the Matterhorn as super wallpapers. The displayed image changes depending on the time of day.
Lower memory and power consumption
MIUI is not exactly known for its low memory consumption. Although the system works flawlessly on cheap smartphones, this is only achieved by omitting features like background images. With MIUI 12.5, background RAM consumption has been reduced by 35 percent and the performance required for super wallpapers has been reduced by 40 percent. At the moment, we cannot verify if this means that more functions will be available on less powerful smartphones.
The memory consumption of the system has also been revised. System applications that are not required can now be uninstalled with two clicks.
Better connection with your PC
This feature is still a long way off: in the future, you should be able to pair your Xiaomi smartphone with a Windows computer using an unpublished “MIUI +” application. Then you can simply copy texts, photos and videos from one side to another and use applications from your smartphone on the PC screen. However, the latter is not compatible with all smartphones.
MIUI 12.5 does not depend on the Android version
Unlike other user interfaces like Samsung’s OneUI, Xiaomi’s MIUI doesn’t depend on an Android version. For example, the current MIUI 12 runs on Android 11 smartphones but also Android 10 or 9. That is why MIUI 12.5 is quickly available for many smartphones.
