With Gorilla Glass Victus 2, US glass specialists Corning have introduced what they say is even stronger glass for end devices like smartphones, which manufacturers plan to use in the coming months. The glass must be able to prevent falls on surfaces such as concrete.
Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is said to be a particularly robust and unbreakable glass, but just as scratch resistant as the first generation Gorilla Glass Victus. With durable glass, there is often a balancing act between particularly impact resistant and scratch resistant properties. A softer material usually provides resistance to breakage, while a particularly hard material is more resistant to scratches.
Also designed for larger smartphones.
However, for Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the focus was not only on greater resistance to waist-height drops onto surfaces rougher than asphalt, but also on achieving these properties with larger and heavier smartphones. As the company explains, the devices have become almost 15 percent heavier in the last four years and are equipped with screens that are up to 10 percent larger. This alone increased the chance of damage, according to Corning. opposite to the edge The company explained that the tests are carried out with a 200g disk to represent current smartphones.
Corning does not provide any information on the composition of the glass. In the lab, however, the company was able to survive drops from a height of up to 1m onto a concrete-like surface without damage. Glasses that compete with Corning products aluminosilicates it would normally miss from two feet or even lower heights, Corning explains. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 should even withstand drops from a height of up to two meters onto relatively soft asphalt.
Galaxy S23 could use Gorilla Glass Victus 2
The company is still keeping a secret from buyers of Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It was only announced that the glass would be tested by various customers. The first products with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will be launched in the coming months. It was recently speculated that Samsung could be one of the first buyers with the Galaxy S23 series expected in February 2023. A new display glass has been in the works, which it offers better protection than Gorilla Glass Victus+ and closes the gap with the Ceramic Shield of the Apple iPhone 12/13/14.
