Empty yawn on Whatsapp?
Take your chat history with you to your new device
Who does not know? You buy a new smartphone, but you don’t have your old chat history ready. But users need not fear loss, because the transmission of messages is done quickly. This is how you do it.
Anyone who buys a new cell phone and installs the WhatsApp messaging service there will initially see a huge void. Only the chat groups you are a member of are listed, no chat history. But there is no need to panic, because conversations can move quickly. This is how you do it.
Android to Android
To transfer WhatsApp chat histories manually, users proceed as follows: In the WhatsApp settings under “Chats” there is the option “Chat backup”. Select this and click the “Save” button to save the history. Then connect the old device to a PC with a USB cable and copy the backup named “msgstore.db.crypt” to the PC. The file is located in the “WhatsApp / Databases” folder and is in the internal memory or on the SD card. Then connect the new mobile phone to PC and copy “msgstore.db.crypt” to WhatsApp folder. Only then start WhatsApp on the new device and re-register with your phone number. The application automatically recognizes the backup and is imported after user approval.
Moving is easier through Google’s cloud storage. The Google Drive option can also be found as a storage location in the backup options. Anyone using this option and then dialing on the new device will be asked if chats should be restored. Click “Restore” – done!
IOS to iOS
If you use WhatsApp on an iPhone, on the other hand, you have no choice: to be able to migrate chat histories, iCloud cloud storage must be activated. The subsequent procedure is then as with Android: just register on the new device with the phone number and answer yes to the question about recovery, that’s all.
Between Android and iOS
It is a bit more complicated for users who switch from an iOS device to an Android device or vice versa: while the switch from iOS to Android is possible for free with the “Wazzap Migrator Lite” application, the other way around it only works with the version little helper pay.
WhatsApp developers are also working on a solution: it has recently become easier, at least on Samsung devices, to go from iOS to Android. However, only for Samsung phones running on Android 10 or newer and have the Smart Switch app installed. According to WhatsApp, a Facebook subsidiary, easy-to-use solutions for third-party manufacturers are already being created.
