The group Ecopetrol, its subsidiary Cenit and AES Colombia put into operation the largest solar park for self-generation of energy which has been built in the country and one of the most modern and innovative in the region, located in the municipality of Castilla La Nueva in the department of Meta. See more about Energy.
The San Fernando ecopark has a installed power of 61 megawatts (MWp), equivalent to the capacity to energize a city of 93,000 inhabitants and will serve to supply part of the energy demand of the Ecopetrol and Cenit operations in the Eastern Plains.
The park occupies an area of 57 hectares, equivalent to 70 professional soccer fields, where more than 114 thousand last generation solar panels are located. These modules have the ability to move according to the orientation of the sun and have bifacial technology that allows them to capture energy on both sides, which ensures greater performance and efficiency.

This solar mega structure was built by AES Colombia at the request of Cenit under a 15-year power supply contract, which includes its operation and maintenance. The investment was close to US $ 40 million, which is equivalent to more than $ 150 billion pesos.
For contribute to the social and economic reactivation of the region, As well as opening more spaces for diversity and inclusion, more than $ 15,000 million in local goods and services were contracted in the construction of the park and 38% of the workforce dedicated to the project corresponded to women.
The entry into operation of this park will prevent the emission of more than 508 thousand equivalent tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere during the next 15 years, a figure similar to the planting of more than 3.9 million trees.
“The entry into operation of this project consolidates the Ecopetrol Group as the largest solar self-generator in the country and shows that renewable energies and hydrocarbons can coexist together. In addition, it positions the department of Meta as a fundamental piece in the Energy Transition due to its solar potential for the development of this type of initiatives, which allow Colombia to continue advancing in meeting the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 51% to 2030 ”, assured the Minister of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa.
Promigas, Surtigas and Aguas de Cartagena will inaugurate Canal del Dique Solar Park
It was inaugurated on first and largest large-scale self-generation park in the Caribbean Region that has solar trackers technology, a state-of-the-art system that guarantees greater energy production compared to traditional systems.
“With the inauguration of this solar park, we ratify our commitment to develop projects focused on generating value for our environments through energy solutions that contribute to sustainability and cost reduction for our customers and users,” said Eric Flesch, president of Promigas.
“We have the firm conviction of contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint of the energy processes of our clients, consolidating ourselves as the first option in the region in this type of project ”, indicated Wilson Chinchilla, vice president of Distribution at Promigas.

The project will generate 11,300,000 kWh / year of electrical energy for the consumption of two raw water pumping stations, belonging to the company Aguas de Cartagena, with whom Surtigas signed a long-term energy sales contract. With 5.6 megawatts (MWp) of installed power and an investment that amounts to $ 19,000 million, Surtigas will cover approximately 20% of the electrical energy consumed by pumping stations.
“The Canal del Dique Solar Park is the result of a strategic alliance between Surtigas and Aguas de Cartagena, which will supply green energy to the city’s aqueduct and for us it is the sign of a firm commitment to reducing our Carbon Footprint. When each person from Cartagena uses the aqueduct and sanitary sewer service, they will see their commitment to the objectives of sustainable development and the environment ”, expressed Jesús García, General Manager of Aguas de Cartagena SAESP
