If you haven’t played Dwarf fortress, the incredibly detailed fantasy world simulator, you can’t understand how nightmare it is to play. It’s not the ASCII graphics that embarrass you, but the menus that hide common information and actions across countless different huge menus, each of which must be accessible at the push of a button.
So, take a look at the screenshot above. You might think it looks like the UI from a Paradox game from the early 2000s, which doesn’t have an art license yet. But I feel bad.
This is a continuous menu view for Kitfox’s upcoming Steam reissue of Dwarf Fortress, which aims to make the game accessible with a nice set of tiles and a set of menu enhancements. What you see above has not yet had an artistic passage, according to the Steam blog post about it, but this is an attempt to collect important information and actions in one place when the player inspects a certain tile and the creatures that are on it.
“The overview tabs and boxes continue to evolve, but the image here is where we are so far in the game,” the post read. “Among physical attributes, mental attributes, facets, and personality beliefs, the game chooses the six strongest or most unique and displays them in the preview. You can then access the full dataset from the tabs; the purpose of these boxes is to answer simple questions and provide the best flavor and context. The same goes for objects, abilities, positions, and the rest. Full data and options can be found in the tabs, with a short summary on the upper level. “
If there is more than one dwarf or creature in the tile you are inspecting, you will be able to navigate through them via “little tabs that appear on the right side”. This should make it easier for the birds to pass. in nate’s bird hole, e.g.
There is no proposed release date for the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress yet, but there is. several development updates every month for whoever wants to follow. This is the game I’ve been waiting for the most in the world.
