Publisher Funcom and developer Shiro Games announced today in a press release that Dune: Spice Wars will enter Early Access on April 26. It is the first time in two decades that players will be able to experience the world of Dune in a video game. Since it was announced at the Game Awards 2021 in December, Dune: Spice Wars has steadily climbed the wishlists on Steam.
The mix of real-time strategy and 4X elements is based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece Dune. On the desert planet of Arrakis, four factions compete for the most valuable resource in the universe: Spice.
The final faction revealed
In addition to the Early Access release date, the fourth playable faction, the Fremen, was also revealed. They can travel through the desert more easily and are less likely to attract giant sandworms than other factions. The Fremen also align more easily with hidden sietches (neutral native settlements), giving them a unique vantage point to gain control of the planet. More information on desert natives can be found in the faction introduction.
Sebastien Vidal, CEO of Shiro Games says:
“With so many Dune fans in the studio, the excitement I experience every day at work is very real. We hope this is reflected in the game. With all this passion for the books and the knowledge we’ve gained through developing Northgard, we can’t wait to bring the title to our players.”
As an Atreides, Harkonnen, Smugglers, or Fremen, players will find a balance between military might, infiltration, political influence, and resource management. Each faction has its own strengths and weaknesses. The exploration, expansion and control of the desert have only one objective: the spice must flow.
In addition to Dune: Spice Wars, Funcom is also developing an open world multiplayer survival game set in the Dune universe. The company has the exclusive rights to publish Dune games on PC and consoles.
