Because he couldn’t stay at headquarters, Apple’s top machine learning employee resigned. As is now known, he has already found a new employer: Google.
Goodfellow was the leader in Machine Learning (ML) at Apple. He left the company because he did not agree with the lack of flexibility in labor policies. Apple had asked its employees to return to the office at least three days a week starting in mid-May.
Goodfellow is no stranger to the new employer. Until 2019 he worked as a senior scientist at the search engine provider. And according to Bloomberg, home office guidelines are also looser at Alphabet than at Apple. Google is also asking its employees to return to the office. However, there are exceptions for most employees.
Observers Expect More Layoffs
At Apple, Goodfellow was the director responsible for machine learning. Developers working on autonomous technology worked with him. The director level is one of the highest positions at Apple. According to Bloomberg, of Apple’s 170,000 employees, about 1,000 are directors.
