An extension has been decided until April 15, 2023
In the morning, after a heated debate, the Bundestag voted by name on extending the life of German nuclear power plants.
Result: the remaining nuclear power plants (Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland) will operate until April 15, 2023.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (64, SPD, stayed away from the debate) pushed for this extension: the federal government had put the bill to a vote.
In a nominal vote, 375 deputies voted in favor of amending the Atomic Energy Law, 216 voted against and 70 abstained, as announced by Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki (70, FDP). 661 votes were cast.
The extension of the mandate until at least December 31, 2024, proposed by the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, was also voted. This request was rejected!
Heated debate over the operation of the nuclear power plant
The former vice president of the CDU Julia Klöckner (49) charged against the Greens: “You are not concerned about the issue or the people, but about your founding myth.”
“For me and for most of the members of my parliamentary group, the temporary expansion of service operations is an impertinence,” said Green MP Harald Ebner (58). “But we expect that because the phase-out of nuclear power will remain in place.” Central to his party is that no new fuel rods be purchased.
Union requested operation before December 31, 2024
“A temporary continuous operation of the Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland nuclear power plants in Germany until December 31, 2024 can make a significant contribution to energy security,” said the motion of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
This contribution would be even more significant if the Brokdorf, Grohnde and Gundremmingen C nuclear power plants, which were decommissioned on December 31, 2021, were put back into operation.
“Given that all the mentioned systems still have a valid operating license and only the authorization to generate electric power expired on December 31, 2021, a renewed authorization for the operation of energy could create the conditions for the commissioning.”
Traffic light extension “insufficient contribution”
An extension of the three nuclear power plants in operation only until April 15, 2023, as proposed by the federal government, would not make a sufficient contribution to expanding electricity supply, the request also states.
The challenges in the winter of 2023/24 are likely to be greater than this winter. The “Independent Commission of Experts on Gas and Heat” established by the federal government reached the same conclusion.
