Apple’s next major update to its iOS mobile operating system won’t arrive until fall 2022, but owners of some iPhone models should be prepared for nothing.
At WWDC 2022 in June, Apple released its big update iOS 16 officially presented. The new firmware brings numerous new features to iPhones and iPads. Much better that Apple provides the update to most of its devices with the release of iOS 16 in September. However, there are also models that do not meet the minimum requirements of iOS 16 and therefore are left empty-handed. And that also applies to models that you probably didn’t expect.
These iPhones will no longer have iOS 16
While iOS 15 is still available for all devices that are also compatible with iOS 14 and thus no iPhone has been removed from the list of updates, things are different with iOS 16. Due to extensive innovations and Due to the resulting increase in demand for hardware, Apple is already reducing the devices that could always wait for an update. According to Apple, five iPhone models will no longer receive the update to iOS 16:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (2016)
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
Therefore, users must have at least an iPhone 8 in order to install the latest Apple operating system. That sounds harsh in light of the availability of updates so far, but it really isn’t. Because the iPhone 8 was released in 2018 and is therefore already five years old. The removed models are even older – many expected Apple to remove them in previous update cycles.

iPads don’t get anything either
There are also iPad models that no longer receive the iPadOS 16 update: the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4. The discarded models date from 2014 and 2015, making them even older than the iPhone.
Update version to iOS 16 or iPadOS 16
Usually, Apple introduces its latest operating system along with the new generation of iPhone. It won’t be any different this year, so we’ll see iOS 16 alongside iPhone 14. The grand keynote usually takes place on a Tuesday in September. Therefore, a possible date would be September 6 or 13.
