Steam Client: Improvements for Linux and macOS, as well as the Vulkan API

The latest update to the Steam game distribution platform client brings improvements for Linux and macOS, as well as the Vulkan graphics API. The July update also brings, among other things, extended support for new controllers and joysticks, as well as bug fixes for Steam Cloud and Remote Play.

Gamers on Linux and macOS benefit

With the July update, Valve has, on the one hand, subjected the Steam Client to product maintenance, which is particularly relevant for gamers with Linux and macOS, and on the other hand, has expanded support for controllers. Player input devices include the Nintendo Online Classic Controller, the Qanba Obsidian and Dragon Arcade joysticks, and the HORI Fighting Stick Mini 4.

  • Fixed Steam Overlay “Force Quit” not working for some native Linux games
  • Fixed some games not being able to create desktop shortcuts
  • Fixed Steam client triggering “split lock” warnings

Fixed Vulkan game crashes

One of the biggest bug fixes in the new version of the Steam game client concerns the Vulkan library. VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_librarywhich should no longer cause some games to crash.

Also, fixed a bug that could cause some games to fail to create a desktop shortcut during installation.

Resource usage by the chat and browser components has been optimized, especially in terms of efficiency when running in the background.

To manually update the Steam Client to the latest version, users must select “Check for Steam Client Updates” from the Steam menu.
