Could the August release be tweaked samples and finished only in July?

Date:

of Valentin Sattler
Reportedly, runnable samples with AD102 GPUs won’t be available until July, which could make it difficult for the RTX 4080/4090 to launch in August. Nvidia’s board partners are also said to be developing with Ampere GPUs at the moment as the AD102 is not yet available to them.

The first RX 6000 and RTX 3000 graphics cards will soon celebrate their second birthday, so it’s about time the successor generations RX 7000 and RTX 4000 were released. At least for the latter, a release window recently appeared at the factory. rumours: Consequently, the Geforce RTX 4090 should appear in August, followed by the Geforce RTX 4080 in September and the Geforce RTX 4070 in October.

possible schedule

In this context, the Igor’s Lab website, with confirmation from the well-known leaker kopite7kimi, now points out that the new AD102 GPU is not yet available to Nvidia’s board partners. So far, they have had to keep working on their new (custom) designs with the current GA102 GPU, which stands in the way of final validation.

On top of that, Igor’s Lab suspects that the parts list for Nvidia’s first RTX 4000 graphics card will only be released this month, thus finalizing the reference design. The first samples will be produced and tested in mid-July, before a working hardware and software sample is first available in mid-July. If the timing is right, then the first useful leaks that are not based on simulations or estimates could appear from then on.

Latest on the topic: Rumors: RTX 4090 in August, RTX 4000 and RX 7000 will be sold at MSRP

After further testing and parallel BIOS development, mass production shouldn’t start until August or September, making an actual August release difficult. If the specified schedule is indeed achieved, the respective test results should also play a role. If Nvidia discovers an error in the PCB design, the release of the RTX 4080/4090 could be delayed by a few weeks.
