Shadow Power Update: Cloud Gaming Workstation with Zen 3, Ampere and RDNA 2

Date:

The cloud streaming provider Shadow (trial) extends the range with a new tariff. With the “power upgrade”, customers get access to four cores and eight threads of an AMD Epyc 7543P and a GPU in the performance class of a GeForce RTX 3070 for a surcharge. It can also be an RDNA 2 graphics card like the Radeon Pro V620. .

However, there may also be a “comparable graphics card for professional users” from Nvidia or another RDNA 2 model in the computer. Which GPU is in the system depends on the respective data center in which the subscriber is registered. 16 GB of RAM is always available.

Shadow is like GeForce Now, only very different

The Shadow service, which has had a new owner since 2021 after financial problems, is also a cloud gaming service, like Nvidia GeForce Now. But that’s where the parallels end. Because Shadow allows customers who log into the cloud system to boot from the cloud system desktop and not from a GeForce Now interface. With it you can do everything you would do on your local system:

  • Play all the games they have, not just the ones licensed for cloud use like GeForce Now.
  • Also use applications like Premiere Pro, AutoCAD or Blender.

Appropriately, Shadow announces with the catchphrase “Your new PC is in the cloud‘ and goes on to say: ‘Get the power of a high-end PC on the devices you already own.

More computing power for an additional charge of 14.99 euros

Shadow’s cloud computer is more than just a gaming PC, but it also costs more. More recently, there was access to a 4-core, 8-thread CPU and its GeForce GTX 1080-class GPU for €29.99 per month. The “Energy Upgrade” costs an additional EUR 14.99, bringing the total monthly costs to EUR 44.98. There is no minimum contract term.

GeForce Now with the new RTX 3080 rate that includes Zen 2 CPU (test) costs 99.99 euros per semester, the equivalent of 16.67 per month. GeForce Now can only be contracted for one month for 19.99 euros per month. The offer is limited to games that the customer also “brings with them”, but can only be streamed if Nvidia holds the license from the publisher. There is a free fee that limits game sessions to one hour and does not guarantee that you will be able to start the next session without waiting.

Can be ordered in advance in summer, can be worn in autumn

Shadow wants the power upgrade”this summer‘released for pre-order,’in the fall“Then it should be available worldwide. For select pre-orders, there must be early access prior to start. More details will follow shortly. Shadow also wants to head to new countries in late 2022, including Canada and Austria.

Shadow Drive: encrypted cloud storage

In addition to the power update, Shadow is also announcing the release of Shadow Drive for the fall. 20 GB of storage space is available free of charge for each user who registers, 2 TB costs 8.99 euros per month. Access will be available through web, desktop and mobile applications, to be announced. Shadow Drive is encrypted and hosted on European and European owned servers in all markets where Shadow operates.

The addition of a cloud storage service is no surprise. The new owner of Shadow is hubiC, a cloud provider belonging to the OVH Group. Shadow has Shadow Drive along with nextcloudthat offer free cloud storage software of the same name.
