Ubuntu has once again stayed true to its codenamed cause: the new Ubuntu 22.04 is called “Jammy Jellyfish” – which means “happy jellyfish”. The abbreviation is simply Jammy.
Undoubtedly, Ubuntu will be interesting for one or another Windows 10 change in the next few years, because Windows 11 increases the hardware requirements noticeably. Windows 10 will continue to be supported until October 2025, Ubuntu 22.04 will run longer.
Ubuntu 22.04 at a glance: here’s what’s new
- Gnomes 42: Ubuntu 22.04 comes with the Gnome desktop pre-installed. It has version number 42, but it still uses some modules from version 41 for compatibility reasons, but a tool for screenshots and screencasts is brand new. The Nautilus file manager also comes with new features.
- Touchpad gestures: There are new touchpad gestures to control the app launcher and switch between workspaces.
- wayland: With the new version of Ubuntu, Wayland’s display server is standard for all configurations.
- True dark theme: True Dark mode displays a sleeker darkened desktop display, and users can also select accent colors.
- Ubuntu Dock: As usual, Gnome 42 also has the Ubuntu port on the left side of the screen. However, it no longer necessarily extends the full height of the screen. However, desktop icons for programs are now arranged in the bottom right corner. But you can also change that.
- core 5.15: Of course, the new Ubuntu also comes with a new kernel, currently version 5.15. It comes with support for current hardware and integrates a new NTFS driver.
- Software updates: The new Ubuntu 22.04 comes with updated application software, Firefox is integrated as an out-of-the-box package.
LTS version with 5 years of support
Every two years, Ubuntu releases a so-called Long Term Support (LTS) release and this is the case again with Ubuntu 22.04. We still offer the latest LTS version parallel to the Download for you.
In plain language, this means you get five years of support for these versions of Ubuntu, i.e. Support until April 2027. Companies can also get particularly long support for a surcharge, then it lasts for 10 years.
An LTS version is also particularly suitable for users who value a stable system. Other distributions that want to provide their users with a stable framework also often use LTS versions.
Test live or with VirtualBox
Windows could learn a thing or two from Ubuntu. The test mode is particularly nice.
