Remote maintenance under Linux: TeamViewer receives support for Wayland

Date:

TeamViewer remote maintenance software for screen sharing, video conferencing, file transfers and VPN connections now has initial support for the free display server protocol under Linux for the first time Wayland. Gnome, the free Linux desktop, is the first workbench to offer full support.

TeamViewer supports Wayland for the first time

Like Linux developer and publisher Ferdinand Thommes about the website linuxnews.de reported, support for the Wayland protocol, previously long discussed within the TeamViewer community, was introduced. The new feature is currently classified as “experimental” and only works on the client side, for which at least version 15.29 of the remote maintenance software is required.

For the first time, the Gnome desktop should fully support TeamViewer via Wayland, which is also used in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS as the new standard for the display server protocol.

More information is provided by TeamViewer Support:

Introduction

It’s a fact: Wayland is becoming more and more prominent than a display server. Ubuntu is releasing the new version 22.04 with Wayland again as the default display server.

Now it’s time for TeamViewer to also support incoming connections when using Wayland in the first experimental state!

Wayland Technical Support

To make sure you are using a Wayland compatible client, you should see a message like the following in the remote view. image.png

If you can see this message, you are logged in to Wayland and your client is ready to support incoming sessions with Wayland.

experimental state

Wayland support is currently available in an early version. The overall feature pack is still limited and 100% stability cannot be guaranteed. Note that Wayland support is still under development in Linux distributions as well. Still, we encourage you to give it a try and give us your feedback for future improvements and a final version.

The following functionality is already provided:

  • Screen share permission request
  • Screen sharing of the main monitor
  • Mouse and keyboard input

What is not ready yet:

  • Connection to login screen
  • Session to unattended devices
  • Change monitor resolution
  • Clipboard Synchronization
  • black screen

Users who wish to test Wayland’s support of remote maintenance software using the KDE Plasma desktop environment should ensure that the
xdg-desktop-portal-kde it’s installed.

X11 for productive use

However, TeamViewer is not yet designed for productive use in a Wayland session, which is why developers continue to use the X Window System (X11) recommend.

Download at Computer Base

As usual, TeamViewer for Windows, macOS, and Linux can be downloaded from the ComputerBase download area directly below this post. More information will be provided by the officer. place and the very extensive User Manual (PDF) to the application
