After AMD and Intel GPUs, the display server protocol Wayland as a standard session, the upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Gnome 42 will also support this for Nvidia graphics cards. A desktop patch takes care of changing the X Window System (X11) in Wayland.
Wayland session as standard for Nvidia GPUs
I like the site linuxnews.de First reported, an update to Gnome Display Manager (GDM 3) from Gnome 42 adds support for the default setting of a Wayland session for Nvidia cards with the proprietary Nvidia driver 510 or later. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (“Jammy Jellyfish”) is expected to be released on April 21 and is based on Linux 5.15 LTS.
Linux 5.15 LTS and Gnome 42 as a base
As part of a hardware enablement stack update, there will also be an optional HWE kernel, likely based on Linux 5.17. This kernel is said to be compatible with the latest hardware at the time, but it will only be updated for 6 months.

GBM replaces EGL and enables Wayland
The implementation of the Generic Buffer Manager (GBM), which Nvidia had long rejected in favor of its own EGLStream (EGL), enables Wayland session realization for Nvidia GPUs.
The Generic Buffer Manager is based on the free libdrm library and is responsible for rendering graphics linked to the Mesa 3D graphics stack.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS drops GTK 4 applications
Although Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is supposed to be based on Gnome 42, the operating system will dispense with the new GTK 4 applications and, like Ubuntu 21.10 (“Impish Indri”), will be based on the GTK 3 applications known from Gnome 41. Of course, nothing stands in the way of a manual switch to GTK 4.
On the applications front we will be more conservative, avoiding GTK4, at least for the software we install by default. The plan is to use Linux 5.15 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, but the OEM and HWE variants will get Linux 5.17 at some point.
