AMD’s decision to only release Radeon Super Resolution scaling technology for RDNA GPUs for the time being has caused a shitstorm. However, this limitation is apparently not set in stone: AMD is said to want to look into expanding RSR support in the future.
After AMD last year with Super Resolution Fidelity FX (FSR) released an alternative to Nvidia’s DLSS, another scaling technique called the new Radeon driver followed this week Radeon Super Resolution (RSR). Unlike FSR, this should work directly through the driver and thus with all games. However, the support provided by graphics cards is problematic, because Radeon Super Resolution currently only runs on GPUs with RDNA architecture.

Therefore, gamers with an older Vega or Polaris GPU cannot use RSR, although the technology is particularly necessary here. In contrast, RSR is based on FSR, and that in turn runs on modern Vega, Polaris, and Geforce graphics cards. From a technical point of view, there is apparently no reason for the limitation to RDNA graphics cards, and that leads to a shit storm. On Reddit there is for example a post with around 1,100 likes and around 500 comments, with numerous users annoyed by the seemingly artificial limitation.
However, according to PC Gamer, there is hope that older Radeon GPUs may still receive RSR. Accordingly, AMD employee Glen Matthews emphasized that one could continue to work on RSR in the future. However, to begin with, the company focused on RDNA graphics cards, as this is where the advantage is greatest due to higher output resolutions. In the second quarter, AMD will also focus on the new Ryzen 6000 APUs. Therefore, no changes should be expected before the third quarter.

Unfortunately, this statement is not a clear confirmation that RSR will also be usable on Vega and Polaris graphics cards in the fall. So it remains to be seen whether AMD will give in to the shitstorm and adapt the software accordingly in the future to run on older architectures as well. After all: such a step is apparently not entirely out of the question.
