Long overdue, Intel is launching the new Ice Lake-D based Xeon D-1700 and D-2700 today. Because they replace Skylake-based processors, the performance gains are huge depending on the application, also because there are now up to 20 cores. The platform is also updated.

The superseded predecessor, codenamed Hewitt Lake, got its start three years ago at Mobile World Congress. Intel is only hesitantly raising the curtain on its successors today. Available as Xeon D-1700 with 4 to 10 cores and Xeon D-2700 with 4 to 20 core variants, the models can definitely have it all.

Frozen Lake replaces Skylake

Speaking of cores. As the code name Ice Lake-D suggests, the new Xeon D offers the CPU cores of the Sunny Cove generation, just like those found in the Ice Lake-SP server CPU family and the Ice Lake mobile series. -OR/. generation kernel on the laptop) can be used. They offer significantly higher performance compared to the Skylake generation, which should have an effect in various tests along with a higher number of cores, additional PCIe 4.0 lanes, and native support for faster LAN. Intel promises huge gains in all target areas.

Two series with large and small matrix

Although Intel’s press release for MCW 2022 of a “Launching“Speak, the facts and data presented are few and far between at best. There are basically two series.

The Xeon D-1700s are based on the LCC (Low Core Count) chip, which offers a smaller number of cores in a small area, which Intel puts at a maximum of ten. As the successor to the D-1600, the Xeon D-1700 now has three memory channels instead of the previous two. The small series can also increase significantly when it comes to memory expansion: instead of just a maximum of 128 GB, there are now at least twice as many, and there will also be options with 384 GB.

The Xeon D-2700 is based on the HCC (High Core Count) chip, a maximum of 20 cores are offered here. It sticks with the quad-channel memory interface, but now for DDR4-3200. In the best case 1 TB of RAM can be addressed, until now it was 512 GB. There are many gradations in RAM speed, which is known from the Xeon D above.

40 models for a wide range of applications

For already more than 70 partners – some have already advanced today – About 40 models of the two CPU series with abbreviations like T, TE, TR and TER will be released. This roughly corresponds to a doubling of the Xeon D-1600 and D-2100 model range combined. The TDP spectrum ranges from 25 to 129 watts, but Intel didn’t provide any details about the models up front.
