According to PC Mag benchmarks, Samsung can significantly increase performance with the Galaxy S22, but still can’t catch up with Apple’s iPhone 13. In terms of CPU and GPU performance, the A15 Bionic is ahead of the Exynos 2200.
This week Samsung introduced the new Galaxy S22 and with it the hardware installed on it. Instead of the previously used Samsung Exynos 2100, the Exynos 2200 will be used in the future, which upgrades the architecture of all three types of CPU cores compared to the previous model. Additionally, the Exynos 2200 uses technology licensed from AMD for the first time: an RDNA2 GPU runs on the chip.
Up to date but not up to date
The PC Mag website has already been able to test the new Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Plus smartphones and thus also classify the performance of the new SoC. Compared to the previous model, there is a significant increase in performance, but Samsung still cannot catch up to the A15 Bionic built into the iPhone 13.
The Exynos 2200 achieves a single-core performance of just over 1200 points in Geekbench 5 and thus significantly more than the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 1094 points. Apple’s iPhone 13 is still clearly ahead with 1,735 points, and despite having only six cores instead of eight, the A15 Bionic can also claim the performance crown in the multi-core benchmark. Here, the iPhone 13 Pro Max scores 4,647 points, while the S22 Ultra scores 3,433 and the S21 Ultra scores 3,156 points.

Ranking graphics performance is somewhat more difficult. For this, PC Mag has published GFX Bench 5 performance values, but Apple and Samsung made them at different resolutions. Compared to the S21 Ultra, the S22 Ultra can stand out by a good 20 percent here in WQHD, so the jump through AMD’s RDNA2 GPU is greater than with the CPU.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max is still ahead here: Compared to the S22 Ultra in WQHD, the model achieves a 24 percent higher off-screen score and a 93 percent higher on-screen score in GFX Bench. At the same time, the WQHD resolution calculated by Samsung smartphones also has 24 percent more pixels than the iPhone 13. So the actual performance differences on the GPU are likely to be much smaller.
