Almost everyone is familiar with the mandatory SMS that informs them that the volume of data has been used up. But why is this happening when you are currently on the WLAN? So is the data volume being used despite the WLAN connection? Yes! TECHBOOK reveals how much and how you can prevent this.
Consumption of data volume in WiFi on iPhone
Apple smartphone owners can read the consumption, well hidden, in the settings. On the “Cellular” menu item, scroll down. There you will find the option “WLAN Support”, which is activated by default on the iPhone. If the WLAN signal is weak, the mobile data is also used automatically. If you have weak WiFi regularly and want to save data volume, you should disable this feature by clicking the green slider so as not to get a nasty surprise.

Data volume consumption in WLAN with Android
Android itself does not provide a function as with the iPhone. When you suspect that too much data volume it is consumed despite WLAN, the only thing that helps is to completely disable mobile data on the WLAN. However, Samsung smartphone owners have the option to disable WLAN support in the settings. This option comes from the manufacturer and is called “Automatically connect to mobile network.” The function can be found in “Settings” -> “WLAN” -> “Advanced”.
High consumption although mostly in the WLAN
In case you’re still wondering a lot of data is usedAlthough you use your device almost exclusively on the WLAN, this can be related to loads. For example, if you save your photos to the cloud, you need to be careful that not all photos are automatically uploaded to online storage. This option is enabled on most devices and uses a large amount of data depending on the number of photos taken.

Mobile providers do not consume any data on the WLAN
TECHBOOK asked the wireless service provider if the data volume is also being used on the WLAN. Volker Petendorf, spokesman for the Vodafone Group, makes everything clear: “The data volume of the mobile phone contract is not used if the customer is connected to a WLAN network with his smartphone or tablet.” Telefónica also points out that only the variants that have described the data are consumed.
