Pokemon Go-style Witcher game released this month

CD Projekt’s latest The Witcher game released this month, but it’s not exactly The Witcher 4; in fact, it’s a Pokemon Go-style AR mobile game, except with slightly scarier monsters. The Witcher: Monster Slayer has a release date of July 21, and asks players to step into the shoes of one of the titular monster hunters, but not Geralt of Rivia.

Unlike Pokemon Go, The Witcher: Monster Slayer will seemingly have a true story, or at least “scripted deep adventures” in missions that are given to the player by the game’s actual characters. It is not known if there will be more. ‘ a general story for players to experience, although the Monster Slayer website says the game will be a prequel “defined long before the time of Geralt of Rivia.”

As for the game itself, it’s a familiar augmented reality walk-em-up of the kind popularized by Pokemon Go, though the focus here is on fighting monsters rather than catching them all. The combat is first-person and “RPG-inspired” with block and hack sword fights, though, as in other Witcher games, players can also drink pre-fight potions for their own good.

Combat aside, the game is all about using the Witcher’s senses to hunt down creatures, and seemingly the time of day and real-world weather will affect which monsters players can track. Trophy collecting will play a role as well, though what they really do, aside from bragging rights, has yet to be revealed.
