Visitors to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, will be able to see Rembrandt’s famous painting “The Night Watch” in its original form. The work was cut in 1715 to fit into the new space of the Royal Palace, but it has now been restored using artificial intelligence.
As reported The New York Times, the museum’s principal investigator Robert Erdmann undertook to restore the canvas. He trained a computer to recreate missing elements pixel by pixel in the Rembrandt style. According to Erdmann, a project of this complexity was made possible by a relatively new technology known as convolutional neural networks – A class of artificial intelligence algorithms designed to help computers understand images.
The painting itself was painted in 1642 and has been a national treasure ever since, which did not protect it – large stripes were cut and lost along the entire perimeter of the canvas. Since the 19th century, the decorated “Night Watch” has been housed in the Gallery of Honor of the State Museum of the Netherlands.
The cut painting is observed to be approximately 15 feet wide and 13 feet high (1 foot = 30.48 cm). About two feet were cut from the left edge of the canvas and another nine inches from the top. Less damage was done to the bottom, which lost about five inches, and to the right side, three were removed.
The reconstruction will allow visitors to see the lost figures on the left – two men and a boy – and, more importantly, feel Rembrandt’s meticulous construction in the composition of the piece. With the missing pieces, the original dynamism of the masterpiece comes to life, giving insight into the artist’s original idea.
Now, for the first time in more than 300 years, the public will be able to see the painting “almost exactly as it was conceived,” said museum director Taco Dibbits. The recovered clipped pieces were hung alongside the original to give an idea of the “Night Watch” as Rembrandt intended.
It’s worth noting that a copy of The Night’s Watch already exists. It was made by Dutch artist Gerrit Lundens in the 17th century, 12 years after the original was created and before it was cut. However, his style was not as detailed as Rembrandt’s. The Lundens composition also flows much more freely, the figures are randomly scattered across the canvas, so it could not be used to recreate one by one.
