Telework: lack of human contact and unpaid overtime

Teleworking is the new reality for millions of workers around the world, in the era of the new coronavirus pandemic. The changes that this new regime has brought to employees, their adaptation to new working conditions, as well as the impact that this change has on their daily lives, is recorded in a new investigation by “Ierax Analytix”, which was carried out online , with the completion of 1,234 questionnaires nationwide, from February 8 to 14.

Initially, 2 out of 3 respondents worked from home in at least one of the two confinements so far. In particular, half of them did so only during the two closures, as they returned to normal conditions during the summer. Likewise, 55% work full time from home and a third of them have been teleworking since last March.

What seems to be missing from the majority of employees because they work from home (70%) is the interaction that existed between colleagues, as long as they went to work normally and in particular 2 out of 3 feel uncomfortable about this lack.

Respondents were also asked to answer how they adapted their space to be more efficient at working from home.

45% said they had made changes to their home (53% of those who work from home since last March), with 85% having reorganized their space and new purchases (45%) such as a camera, computer headphones (79%) or a chair . (57%). The costs of these purchases are mostly borne by the employees themselves.

What greatly annoys and hinders respondents is the lack of control over the schedule (53%), with the consequence that it is easily extended. 48% have problems because they are out of tune by other members who live in the home, especially those under 30 years old, and 42% because they have limited or no work space. The issue of Internet connectivity (38%) is also quite annoying, either due to the low speed or the frequent interruptions.

In addition, the transfer of work from home was not so easy for everyone, as approximately half of the respondents (45%) faced difficulties mainly related to communication problems (79%) with colleagues and employers. Of particular importance is the fact that 46% of the participants work more hours than their working day, and 90% do not charge for overtime, demonstrating that there are gaps in the overall organizational part of a business operation. job. For this reason, the changes that interest them focus on the part of the information flow (1 in 3 wants more frequent meetings to resolve doubts), as well as the strictest adherence to the schedule (13%).

Finally, 42% (and especially those under 50) prefer a hybrid work model, in which they can alternate between work and home, showing that the new conditions will change previous work habits. On the other hand, 38%, and especially those over 50, prefer to work full time from the office, as adjustment is more difficult.
