Less than an hour after Washington coach Jimmy Lake said the Huskies football opener would be played, an amazing event happened and Pac-12 canceled it at California’s request. The game is not configured.
The meeting tweeted a statement Thursday, saying the Golden Bears demanded that they not play because there was no minimum number of scholarship players available for virus concerns.
On Wednesday, Cal reported that the player tested positive for COVID-19 and the team needed to contact the trace.
Meanwhile, Lake said his team was fully intended to fly to the Bay Area to play the opener on Friday after a bright practice on Thursday morning.
“All we’ve heard is that the game has begun,” Lake told reporters in a zoom call. “Now we have just practiced great and are ready to travel to Berkeley for our first victory.”
Still, as soon as the first-year UW head coach provided the declaration, the wheels moved and unplugged in a Saturday night match kicked off at 7:30 pm.
Jennifer Cohen, an athletic director at the University of Washington, said in a statement: “Our students, coaches and staff have put incredible effort to reach this point. Berkeley. We are also disappointed with Husky Nation. They are very patient and supportive. That said, the policies and protocols developed by Pac-12 put local and state authorities at the top of the health and safety of students, coaches and staff, and couldn’t wait to support Dog this weekend. I put it on the front line. “
Husky in this pandemic era has canceled three football openers. September 5th is Michigan, September 26th is Stanford and this cal game.
They are now paying attention to the next match against Oregon at Husky Stadium at 8 pm on Saturday, November 14th.
After receiving news from Cal that the game could be at stake, he and his staff contacted all UW players and made every effort to calm the season opener. I reassured them that they would be.
The coach said a positive test said Bears athletes were said to be in good health.
All this news came while UW announced a surge in positive COVID-19 cases among baseball players and had to stop their team’s off-season training on campus.
The school reports that nine athletes have been tested positive for virus and quarantine care.
According to Lake, his players never interact with other UW athletes and are basically in a bubble at the football facility in the stadium.
“It’s negative around here that the football team is here and doesn’t meet anyone,” the coach said. “Now it’s clearly positive. No other athletes come here and we never leave the football part.”
The Huskies flew to California at noon on Friday and remained isolated until it was time to go to the stadium on Saturday night, with no walkthrough the night before. The University of Washington athletes were tested by meeting personnel on Saturday with a result of one hour.
