BUFFALO — When it comes to performing support, Jacob deGrom is a spoiled man.
These words have rarely been spoken before and may never be spoken again, but now they also apply to the Mets ace.
As deGrom wins the NL Cy Young Award three times in a row, the lineup around him continues to ring. On Friday night, he defeated the Blue Jays 18-1 in the Sargrofield and re-performed at least two touchdown Mets performances at the start of deGrom. With deGrom on the mound last Sunday, Mets scored 14 runs and hit five home runs in a victory over the Phillies.
Mets, who started his second match behind the Marlins, remained firmly in the postseason hunt with two consecutive victories at NL’s second wildcard spot.
“The way everyone is swinging the bat now feels like we’re in every game,” deGrom said.
By the fourth inning, the only drama revolved around whether deGrom’s NL-leading ERA would decline. The mission was completed and the ERA dropped from 1.69 to 1.67 as deGrom scored 1 run with 3 hits and 2 walks and allowed 9 strikes with 6 innings. DeGrom has three remaining starts this season.
On cold nights, deGrom’s biggest challenge may have remained loose during the extended innings.
“In the meantime, there really wasn’t really a place to throw as cool as I probably had,” deGrom said. “They had some heaters [in the dugout] I was trying to stay in front of me, just trying to be loose. ”
Dominic Smith’s first career grand slam emphasized four innings of ten runs, with Mets batting practice against Anthony Kay and Jacob Wagspack, and the Blue Jays defensively attacking.
Former Mets farmer Kay, who went to the Blue Jays for a deal last summer with Marcus Stroman, allowed four hits, six runs and two innings. One of the runs was unsuccessful after catcher Danny Janssen dropped a throw from the shortstop Santiago Espinal to JD Davis’ grounder with the bass loaded.
The fun of Mets was just beginning. Smith cleared the Grand Slam’s right field fence (the eighth home run of the season) and started the next rally in the innings after Mets led 9 to 1. Ramos hit a three-run double after Robinson Canó and Jeff McNeil dominated the Wagspack and Singles, respectively, and Andres Guimenez digged near his hand to load the bass. Another run scored when Lourdes Gurriel Jr struggled to handle Michael Conforto’s left line drive towards a single. The Inning Massacre was complete with Davis’ RBI single.
“[DeGrom] Smith goes out every five days and shatters every start. “We just want to back him up on a few runs so that he will be very tough against the batter.”
Comfort defeated a two-run home run in three runs and stopped on Wednesday when the highlight reel catch returned to Infield, helping Mets beat the Orioles.
Ramos enjoyed a breakout night on the plate and finished 3-5 with 4 RBIs. Included is the 8th Solo Homer.
The defensive disappointment of Toronto’s first night helped Mets win a gift run to take a 4-1 lead. McNeil hit the flyball to the right, but Cabambigo couldn’t see it until he landed in front of him.
DeGrom’s only allowed run came when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. first hit a shot from the right field fence of the RBI single. Erasmo Ramirez was wiped out with three innings of no-goal relief.
“A game like this will give the bullpen a really good breath,” said manager Luis Rojas. “Our bullpen has been used a lot. There were a lot of short excursions from pitchers. Games like this help after a day off.”
