The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) yesterday authorized three operators (Claro, Entel and Telefónica) to implement 5G technology for service on mobiles.
Initially the coverage will reach Ica, Trujillo, Arequipa, Cañete, Huarochirí, Callao and Lima. While the scope at the national level will depend on the business expansion plans of each operator.
For example, Entel announced that it will arrive in Chiclayo, in addition to Arequipa, Trujillo and Lima. Ramiro Lafarga, general manager of the operator, specified that since yesterday the coverage is already enabled in Surquillo, and San Isidro will join.
For its part, Claro also enabled 5G mobile coverage since yesterday in some areas of Lima. “At this moment (yesterday) we already see several clients connected to the 5G network with the equipment they previously had,” he said.
Also, Claro began with the commercialization of seven smartphones compatible with this technology, either for prepaid or postpaid. In the case of Entel, they have two teams available and will launch a special 5G plan for postpaid lines.
Results and projection
The MTC recalled that a month ago it authorized the implementation of the 5G network for fixed wireless internet. “The commercial plans offered by the operators increased 2.5 times the speed (Mbps) and 2 times the amount of data (GB) previously offered,” explained the Vice Minister of Communications, Diego Carrillo.
The official added that they will tender during 2022 new blocks of the radioelectric spectrum to achieve the optimal development of the potential of 5G. With this, it is estimated that the speed offer will increase up to 10 times and the web response times will be reduced to 1-2 milliseconds, compared to 20 milliseconds for the 4G network.
